U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka suggested Sunday that a phone call from Dustin Johnson helped him stay studious during a final turn during Erin Hills.
Koepka, 27, claimed his initial vital on Sunday, carding a five-under 67 in a final turn to secure a four-stroke victory.
The American’s success came a year after Dustin Johnson’s own maiden vital feat during Oakmont. Koepka pronounced Johnson had called him on Saturday, charity some recommendation that came in handy.
“[I was] only staying one shot during a time. That’s what we kept doing,” he told a news conference.
“Dustin indeed called me final night and told me a same thing, only stay patient. Just keep doing what you’re doing, you’re going to win a thing, and only don’t get forward of yourself. A garland of people told me that.
“And we felt like we unequivocally stayed studious all week. Between conversations I’ve had with Claude [Harmon III] and Pete Cowan sat me down, we think, on Tuesday, and kind of had a review with me only kind of staying patient, not perplexing to win.
“I felt like that has been a thing newly with me, because we haven’t unequivocally played that well, I’ve been perplexing to win so badly. we felt like I’ve underachieved. And a some-more studious that we can become, a some-more times I’ll put myself in this situation.”

Koepka finished during 16 under, relating Rory McIlroy’s record measure to standard in a tournament’s history.
He pronounced Johnson, one of several large names to stunningly skip a cut, was understanding after a span played a turn together forward of a event.
“I meant there’s substantially not that most that’s that interesting, to be honest. It was a prolonged phone call. For us it was like dual minutes, it wasn’t much,” Koepka said.
“But he only pronounced a few things, and only stay patient. And I’ll win if we stay studious and only keep doing what I’m doing.
“Because we played Tuesday use turn together and, we mean, he watched me play. we suspicion we played flattering plain on Tuesday. And he pronounced he was pulling for me and only hang in there. It will happen.”
