Raising a roof on 2020 Tokyo Olympics gymnastics venue

TOKYO — Attention Simone Biles: They’re building a gymnastics venue in Tokyo where we can supplement to a 4 Olympic bullion medals we won as a star in Rio de Janeiro.

The new Tokyo 2020 Olympic venue is median completed. On Wednesday engineers lifted a large wooden roof section, one of 5 wooden sections that will tip out a 20.5 billion yen ($180 million) building.

Architect Hidemichi Takahashi says a all-wooden roof “will promulgate Japan’s timber culture.” Wood has been traditionally used in Japanese housing, and eremite shrines and temples.

The venue will chair about 12,000 and will be used for 10 years after a Olympics by a Tokyo civil supervision as a gathering facility. Plans after that call for a building to be razed.
