What’s it like to watch your son ceaselessly yield around a residence and adult and down a front staircase? According to Olympian Michael Phelps, it’s usually a “coolest” thing.
Phelps chatted with PEOPLE about being a father to 14-month aged son Boomer Robert during Thursday’s Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports Awards 2017 in L.A. And for a late pro swimmer, it’s about savoring all a tiny changes that make fatherhood so special.
“It’s so funny, yet we had somebody tell me, ‘Never wish that they walk, talk, do this or that, since by a time they do, we skip them,’ ” a first-time father, who picked adult a fable endowment and was coated in bullion muck during a event, says. “And it is tough since now he is walking, he is cruising around a house, and it’s overwhelming usually watching his emotions.”
“[Even] examination him get undone during times when he can’t unequivocally tell us what he wants,” adds 32-year-old Phelps. “I consider that is a coolest thing, examination him grow, and examination him figure out new things.”

The 23-Olympic-gold-medal holder also seems to be really studious when it comes to Boomer’s toddler antics.
“We came into a residence where we are staying out here, and we don’t have stairs in Arizona, so a usually thing that he [wanted] to do was yield adult and down a steps,” Phelps tells PEOPLE.
“That is all we did, we usually stood by a stairs and he went up-down, up-down. It is a little things in life, where examination him are a coolest.”

“We’re during a theatre where we’re constantly looking out for him, since he’s grabbing everything,” Phelps formerly PEOPLE. “Boomer has a flattering brief courtesy span, though, so he’ll go from meddlesome to not in a second.”
