Cubs’ Carl Edwards Jr.: Could see stretched purpose in 2017

Edwards could see an uptick in use this deteriorate and presumably a higher-leverage role, The Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Edwards pitched a total 61.1 innings final year between Triple-A and a majors. He posted a 3.75 ERA with 52 strikeouts opposite 36 innings for a Cubs, and manager Joe Maddon pronounced Edwards could be used in a setup purpose this year for closer Wade Davis. “You saw final year what he’s able of doing,” Maddon said. “I unequivocally expect a lot of a same and substantially a small bit of an uptick there.
