Michael Phelps, a many flashy Olympian of all time, done waves Saturday after he tweeted that he is going to lapse to veteran swimming and start training for a 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
But a hype around Phelps returning to a pool was short-lived. Team USA posted on Instagram that a proclamation was partial of an Apr Fools’ Day joke.
The antic duped some people — generally after his teammate and former roommate during a 2016 Olympics Ryan Lochte challenged Phelps to a re-match during a 2020 games. Even teammate Katie Ledecky has pronounced she doesn’t trust he’ll lay out a 2020 Summer Games.
TIME reported final summer that “before nearing in Rio, Phelps told reporters that this would be his ‘potential’ final Olympic appearance. ‘Just so we guys don’t kick me to genocide if we come back.'”
Phelps came out of “retirement” in Apr 2014, notwithstanding vowing that he would not continue swimming professionally in his 30s. At a 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, a 31-year-old finished adult winning 5 some-more bullion medals and a silver, bringing his award count adult to to 23 Olympic titles and 28 medals.
